Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is a 2023 American action-adventure film directed by James Mangold and co-written by Mangold, Jez Butterworth, John-Henry Butterworth, and David Koepp. It serves as the fifth and final installment in the Indiana Jones film series and follows the events of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008). The film features the return of Harrison Ford, John Rhys-Davies, and Karen Allen in their respective roles, along with new cast members Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Antonio Banderas, Toby Jones, Boyd Holbrook, Ethann Isidore, and Mads Mikkelsen.
Set in 1969, the story revolves around Indiana Jones and his goddaughter, Helena Shaw, as they embark on a mission to find a powerful device that could alter history. Their search turns them against Jürgen Voller, a former Nazi scientist now working for NASA, who intends to use the device to change the outcome of World War II.
While Steven Spielberg and George Lucas served as executive producers, this film marks the first in the series not to be directed by Spielberg or conceived by Lucas. Additionally, it is not distributed by Paramount Pictures due to Disney’s acquisition of Lucasfilm and a subsequent rights deal.
Development of a fifth Indiana Jones film began in the late 1970s, with Lucas and Spielberg negotiating sequels to Raiders of the Lost Ark. However, the project faced numerous delays and changes over the years. James Mangold took over as director after Spielberg stepped down in 2020. Filming began in 2021 and spanned locations including the UK, Italy, and Morocco.
The film premiered out of competition at the 76th Cannes Film Festival on May 18, 2023, and was released by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures in the United States on June 30. Despite receiving lukewarm reviews, “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” has grossed $154 million worldwide. With a reported budget of $295 million, it stands as one of the most expensive films in the franchise and in movie history.
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny Storyline :
In 1944, Indiana Jones and archaeologist Basil Shaw are captured by the Nazis while trying to recover the fake Holy Lance of Longinus at Nuremberg Castle. Astrophysicist Jürgen Voller reveals that the Spear is a forgery, but he has found half of the Archimedean Dial, an ancient astronomical calculator. Jones escapes on a Nazi train, frees Basil, and gets half of the dial. They jump off the train before the allies bomb it.
In 1969, an elderly Jones, depressed after the death of his son Mutt in the Vietnam War, is visited by his goddaughter Helena Shaw, an archaeologist. She wants to investigate the Dial, but Jones warns her of its dangers. Helena steals the Dial-half and plans to auction it off illegally. Jones evades Voller’s henchmen and seeks the help of Voller’s friend Sallah.
Jones and Helena are attacked and Voller steals half of the dial. Jones, Helena and his partner Teddy chase Voller through Tangier in an auto rickshaw. The CIA tries to stop Voller but fails. Jones retrieves a tablet with instructions for reaching the other half of the Dial from a sunken ship. Voller kills his ally Renaldo and pursues them to Archimedes’ tomb in Sicily.
At the tomb, Voller captures Jones and reveals his plan to travel back in time and alter history. Jones and Helena find the second Dial-half and the skeleton of Archimedes holding a wristwatch. Voller opens a rift in time, intending to go back to 1939, but they end up in 212 BC. C. during the siege of Syracuse. Jones and Helena escape, while Teddy lands safely.
Helena urges them to leave as the fissure collapses, but Jones wants to stay. Helena knocks him out and they return to 1969. Jones wakes up and is reunited with Helena, Teddy and Marion, his estranged wife. They reconcile, ending their affair.

The development of the fifth Indiana Jones film has been a long and complex process. The idea of a fifth film was initially discussed between George Lucas and Steven Spielberg in 1979, and a deal was reached with Paramount Pictures for five Indiana Jones films. In 2008, after the release of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Harrison Ford expressed his willingness to return for a fifth film if the development process was shorter.
George Lucas began researching possible plot devices for another film in 2008, with Spielberg open to directing it. However, there were differences of opinion between Lucas and Spielberg on the direction of the franchise. Lucas wanted to take it somewhere new, while Spielberg wanted to stay true to the original feel of the series.
In 2012, the Walt Disney Company acquired Lucasfilm, including the Indiana Jones intellectual property. Disney bought the distribution and marketing rights to future Indiana Jones movies from Paramount, and Kathleen Kennedy became the new president of Lucasfilm.
In 2015, Kennedy confirmed that Lucasfilm would make another Indiana Jones movie, and Harrison Ford expressed his desire to wrap up the character’s journey. By late 2015, Spielberg, Kennedy, and Ford had discussed story ideas for the fifth film.
In 2016, Disney announced that the fifth film would be released in 2019, with Spielberg directing and Ford reprising his role. However, due to scheduling conflicts and the need for an approved script, the release date was pushed back. David Koepp was hired as a writer, and a new release date was set for 2021. But Koepp ultimately left the project, and Spielberg stepped down as director in 2020, wanting to hand the series over to a new filmmaker.
James Mangold was confirmed as director in May 2020 and worked on a new script with Jez and John-Henry Butterworth. The COVID-19 pandemic gave Mangold the time he needed to refine the script. The movie, titled Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, is inspired by the first Indiana Jones movie, Raiders of the Lost Ark. The MacGuffin in the film is the fictional Archimedes Dial, inspired by the real-life Antikythera mechanism.
In general, the development of the fifth Indiana Jones film involved multiple writers, director changes, and changes in release dates. But with James Mangold at the helm and a new script, the movie is moving towards production.
