In December 2020, Alaqua Cox was cast as Maya Lopez / Echo in Marvel Studios’ Disney+ series Hawkeye. In March 2021, a spin-off series centered on Echo was announced, titled Echo. The series is being developed for Disney+ with Etan Cohen and Emily Cohen as initial writers and executive producers. Marion Dayre later became the head writer. The directors of the Hawkeye episode that introduced Echo, Bert & Bertie, are not involved in the spin-off series.

The writers’ room for Echo was formed by March 2021, and the series will have a diverse group of writers, including Shoshannah Stern, Josh Feldman, Rebecca Roanhorse, and more. The story will focus on a small town and explore the consequences of Echo’s actions in Hawkeye, revealing her origin story. Matt Murdock / Daredevil will be included in the series, searching for a former ally, possibly Jessica Jones.

Casting for Echo began in August 2021, with Marvel Studios looking to cast deaf Native American or Latinx women. In April 2022, Vincent D’Onofrio and Charlie Cox were revealed to be reprising their roles as Wilson Fisk / Kingpin and Matt Murdock / Daredevil, respectively. Devery Jacobs was cast in a lead role named Julie. Chaske Spencer, Tantoo Cardinal, Cody Lightning, and Graham Greene were also announced as part of the cast. Stacy Caballero serves as the costume designer for the series. Filming started in April 2022 in Atlanta and the surrounding areas, with Sydney Freeland and Catriona McKenzie directing. Kira Kelly served as the cinematographer. Principal photography wrapped on August 26, 2022, after 92 days of filming. However, in May 2023, it was reported that the series had undergone significant production issues and would require reshoots.

The series was originally filmed as eight episodes but may be edited down to four or six episodes during post-production. Joel Pashby serves as the editor. Mato Wayuhi is working on the score for the series.
