Leo (also known as Leo: Bloody Sweet) is an upcoming Indian Tamil-language action film directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, co-written by Rathna Kumar and Deeraj Vaidy. Produced by Seven Screen Studio, the film features Vijay and Trisha in the lead roles, with Sanjay Dutt, Arjun Sarja, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Mansoor Ali Khan and Mysskin also cast.
Initially titled Thalapathy 67, the film was officially announced in January 2023 to mark Vijay’s 67th lead role. The title “Leo” was revealed soon after. Principal photography began in Chennai, with occasional shots in Kashmir. Filming is scheduled to wrap up in mid-July. The film’s music is composed by Anirudh Ravichander, while Manoj Paramahamsa serves as the cinematographer and Philomin Raj handles editing.
Leo is scheduled for a worldwide theatrical release on October 19, 2023.
Leo Bloody Sweet Production :
Lokesh Kanagaraj, who directed Vijay in the film Master (2021), is set to collaborate with him again for their second film together. The project, initially dubbed Thalapathy 67 and later titled Leo, is being financed by Seven Screen Studio and co-produced by Vijay’s manager Jagadish. The film is budgeted at ₹250-300 crore and Vijay has opted for a revenue sharing model instead of a fixed remuneration, which shows his commitment to the success of the film.
During the six-month pre-production phase, Lokesh co-wrote the script with Rathna Kumar and Deeraj Vaidy. The film aims to cater to a larger audience, which leads to some changes to the original story. The cast includes Vijay, Trisha as the female lead and Sanjay Dutt making his Tamil film debut as one of the main antagonists. Priya Anand, Arjun, Mysskin, Sandy Master, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Mansoor Ali Khan, Mathew Thomas and others have also been confirmed for leading roles. Notably, the film will be a posthumous release for actor Manobala, who passed away on May 3, 2023.
Manoj Paramahamsa serves as cinematographer, Anirudh Ravichander composes the music, and other key members of Lokesh’s team from previous projects are retained. The production of the film began with a muhurat puja in December 2022, followed by the shooting of a promotional video. Leo marks Lokesh’s chance to show off his distinctive style, unlike Master, who he considered a mix of his and Vijay’s visions.
Filming :
Principal photography for the film started on 2 January 2023 at EVP Film City in Chennai. Some scenes were also shot in Kodaikanal and Kashmir. During Kashmir’s programming, a leaked recording of Vijay went viral, prompting the film’s security partner to warn against sharing such content. Strict measures were put in place, including a ban on the use of mobile phones by the cast and crew on set. Director Mysskin and actor Arun Vijay completed their roles in February and March respectively.
Notable camera equipment, including a RED V-raptor XL and a Komodo-X, were used to film key sequences. Sanjay Dutt joined the Kashmir show and completed his scenes in six days. Filming was briefly halted due to a small earthquake, but resumed soon after. A challenging fight scene with Vijay was shot in extremely cold weather in Kashmir. The team expressed their appreciation to the crew who worked in sub-zero temperatures.
The third schedule was initially planned for March but started on April 5 in Chennai. Vijay, Dutt, Trisha, Arjun and Priya Anand participated in this show, which included action scenes filmed using a Mocobot camera. The filmmakers set out to shoot a huge intro song with 2,000 background artists, eventually capturing it with 500 artists in June. The production cost of the song amounted to ₹7 crore.
The final show took place in Hyderabad, including the climax shot at Ramoji Film City. At the end of June, the shoot was shifted to Talakona, Hyderabad. Production is expected to be finished by mid-July.
