Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is the highly anticipated sequel to the 2018 film Aquaman. Development for the sequel began during the production of the first film, with star Jason Momoa pitching a story idea to Warner Bros. Pictures Group chairman Toby Emmerich and producer Peter Safran. Director James Wan expressed interest in exploring the unexplored underwater kingdoms introduced in the first film.

In February 2019, Warner Bros. hired Noah Gardner and Aidan Fitzgerald to write a script for a spin-off film titled The Trench, based on one of the kingdoms. However, the spin-off was later canceled to focus on the main sequel. David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, co-writer of the first film, was brought in to write the screenplay for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.

Filming for the sequel began in June 2021 under the working title Necrus. The production took place in locations such as London, Devon, Hawaii, Jersey City, and Los Angeles. Principal photography wrapped up in January 2022.

Post-production work on the film was affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to a delay in the release date. The film’s release was rescheduled to March 17, 2024, and then moved again to December 20, 2024. During this time, there were reports of reshoots, with both Ben Affleck and Michael Keaton reprising their roles as Batman in the DC Extended Universe. However, it is unclear which version of Batman will appear in the final cut.

The film is directed by James Wan, who wanted to explore more worldbuilding and incorporate horror elements into the sequel.
