Deadpool & Wolverine, which is more meta than matter, tears apart the Marvel Cinematic Universe, pays homage to and parodies the works of the 20th Century Fox era, and then, with an eye toward a long-term reinvention that can revitalize and expand the genre, moves the two titular superheroes into the center of it.
The film does this in-your-face surgery using a variety of narrative scalpels. Though uneven, the outcomes are unquestionably worthwhile. It is packed with everything that fans of superhero movies could possibly want, often at the expense of the story it is trying to tell for a bigger picture than its actual specifics.
A ton of mixed-up elements are thrown at us in Deadpool & Wolverine, including a ton of different versions of both superheroes, profanities, raucous one-liners, pulpy violence, and fourth wall breaches.
A loud, rollicking mixture that rattles along at a dizzying pace, the frantic medley bounces between the respectful and the irreverent, leaving little room for exposition for anyone who might be new to the game. But with all of its inside jokes, Deadpool & Wolverine might not be suitable for everyone.

The unrestrained excess of the Shawn Levy-directed movie, which was written by five writers (including the director, lead actor Ryan Reynolds, and the two screenwriters who wrote the previous Deadpool movies, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick), cannot hide the fact that the Marvel machine may be starting to feel the weight of the multiverse genre’s clichés. Deadpool & Wolverine makes an effort at a revamp and a trip via new portals.
Wolverine is the “anchor being” of the timeline that Deadpool lives in, and it is in danger of completely disappearing. That means that not only will the whole planet be destroyed, but also every person that Wade Wilson, aka Deadpool, loves will perish. That’s why the superhero is desperate to revive Logan/Wolverine so they can work together to rescue the planet.
The exercise gains a great deal of strength and appeal from Reynolds and co-lead Hugh Jackman, who just logged off from portraying Wolverine in Logan (2017) after nine films in which he wore an ironclawed mask. That helps the film overcome its shortcomings and low points.
The antagonists are pure evil: Mr. Paradox (Matthew Macfadyen), who plots to seize control of the Time Variance Authority (TVA), and Cassandra Nova (Emma Corrin), who commands the Void, a purgatory for misfits. However, they are also permitted to occasionally indulge in their dark, otherworldly humor.
Wade Wilson, who is currently employed as a used car salesman after splitting from Vanessa Carlysle (Morena Baccarin) and failing to join the Avengers in an other reality, is arrested by TVA and given the mission of trying to save his timeline.
The entire movie has an air of absurdity. It is mostly due to the merc with the mouth’s witty enthusiasm and keeps Deadpool & Wolverine from being an overly dramatic and tiresome experience. The film is able to avoid going too far down the trough, even when it approaches the verge of being overbearing.
The screenplay provides commentary on the Marvel superhero genre, highlighting its ups and downs over the last few decades, both during and after action scenes. Deadpool makes lighthearted jokes about himself. Not only does he get away with them, but he also raises the enjoyment factor in the movie.
Some of the jabs are aimed at Disney, which bought 20th Century Fox in March 2019 and is now expanding the Marvel universe. Deadpool jokes to the incredulous and permanently frowning Wolverine, “Welcome to the Marvel universe, you are joining it at a bit of a low point.”
Later in the movie, Deadpool tells an astonished family outside a used car dealership, pointing to Wolverine: “Disney brought him back.” He’ll be forced to perform this task until he becomes ninety. Will there be dissenting whispers? Very improbable.
Aside from being a loving homage to a bygone era of superhero films that, with their ever-expanding reach, gave rise to an international fandom of infatuated superfans, the movie relies on being as sardonic as Deadpool can be. Deadpool & Wolverine caters to this latter group of customers.
However, even those who are unable to distinguish between Earth-10005 and Earth-616, or X-23 and Blind Al, will find enough in the two-hour film to keep them engrossed in its unrelenting barrage of set pieces that are transparent about their goals.
A partially destroyed 20th Century Fox logo and ruins of scenes from earlier Marvel movies surround Deadpool and Wolverine’s first battle, in which there can be no winner or loser because neither can be mortally wounded due to their accelerated regenerative abilities. Their intense battle is an attempt to both build on and erase the past.
The Marvel universe is looking for a resurrection, and Deadpool and Wolverine have a great chance of doing just that. With determination and ferocity, they bare their teeth, release their claws, and brandish their katina swords.
Even when monotony threatens to set in, the constant barrage of violence, repeated barbs at shamelessly lowbrow humor, and overall bubbly overtones make it feel less boring than it otherwise would.
Wolverine & Deadpool is for Marvel enthusiasts. Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds are stirring up a full-on storm for everyone else.
