If you have already seen Squid Game season 2, you are aware that it feels like only half of a season, with a major cliffhanger in the middle, and that you only made it through half of the current games (spoilers).
Fortunately, Netflix and creator Hwang Dong-hyuk have made sure that there won’t be any production pauses in between seasons, so we won’t have to wait another three years for season 3. As a result, Squid Game’s third season is considerably closer than we initially believe.
A “2025” launch window has been mentioned before, although that might have meant Christmas, a full year off. However, according to Hwang Dong-hyuk, it’s getting closer and could possibly be as short as six months until Squid Game makes a comeback. This is the timeframe he gave Variety when they inquired about the release date for season three:
“At this point, everything I can say would be a spoiler, so I want to be careful. But what I can say is that after the launch of season 2, I think we will announce the start date of season 3, probably expect it to start around the summer or fall of next year. But when it comes to the story of the third season, with Gi losing everything, including his best friend, and all his efforts fail, the question is now, how will it be? In what condition will Gi-hun be? And what will he choose to do? Will he continue the mission? Will he give up or continue? So you will meet our character Gi-hun at a very critical crossroads as we begin season three. Gi-hun will no longer be the man he was in season 2.”
The beginning of summer would be six months, the end of autumn would be closer to 11 months if it’s November, but somewhere in between we can split the difference to maybe 8 or 9. Regardless, it’s very out of the norm for Netflix to literally make annual seasons. much less new seasons of a series coming out in less than a year. But it is clear that seasons 2 and 3 of Squid Game are different cases, really a very long season divided into two.And yes, it was very broken, one of the aspects that did not work enough with season 2 (spoilers to follow). The two plots B and C about the poacher finding the island and the guard interfering with an organ harvesting operation have been building throughout the season, but they barely got there, apparently they didn’t come to fruition the season 3 moment. And in Season 1, we managed to cram all six games into nine episodes. We’re only three out of seven episodes here, and yes, it seems very likely that all three will play out in Season 3. At least we don’t have to wait that long.
There are some interesting quotes about why Hwang Dong-hyuk decided to split seasons 2 and 3 this way, considering that season 2 feels like a half-season with a whole series of cliffhangers that are pretty disappointing once the finale airs. Spoilers to follow.“No particular reason other than the fact that I originally envisioned this as one series, so seasons two and three as one series when I wrote it. But then when I wrote the story, it became. long and very long because you see Gi-hun’s journey where he comes back into the game, but he also goes through a rebellion, and this is really the climax of that story, where he tries to create a rebellion, but then everything fails.”
“And I also saw this aspect as another game, and so I thought we split it into two seasons to have this – Gi-hun’s rebellion turns into a failure, he ends up losing his best friend, which in itself is another major. climatic event in the first half of the season, so in the second season. split into two seasons of the popular series’ return. Instead, there were a lot of episodes here, maybe seven more at an hour or so each, and Netflix never releases 14-episode, 14-hour seasons. But they also didn’t want to wait three years for this story to end, because this would at least work more like one of their traditional “vacations,” albeit with a 6-12 month gap instead of just 1-2. months like many 10-episode seasons.
